Reynolds Subaru: Learn More About the Dealership Family That Service Built, Since 1938

You may know us as the new Subaru and used car dealership out on Madison Road serving Orange and north Virginia beyond. Sure, we're the place to go when you need affordable auto financing. Our Subaru service department's even second to none, home to both expert car repair technicians and a full stock of genuine Subaru auto parts and accessories. The long story, short: we wear Subaru excellence on our sleeve.

But, we'd like to think we're not just another new and used car dealer. Moreover, we think that the long story's more important. It reminds us of where we've been, who we are, where we're going, and how we're a part of the greater Orange community we love. It's fitting, then, that our Subaru brand is more than just an automotive name. The word, in Japanese, has a special meaning, "unite." It comes peculiarly full circle in our storied history.

The Reynolds name originated humbly in 1930 as a Shell service station just a quarter of a mile from where we live today. Whether you're a long-time resident or just enjoying our corner of Old Dominion, you know it as the historic town of Orange. For those not from our neck of the northern Virginia woods, that's just up the 20 North from Charlottesville, down 15 South from Culpeper, and across VA-3 West and down VA-20 South from Fredericksburg.

The station had but one committed employee -- Chester Arthur Reynolds Sr., better known as "Jack," a child of the Great Depression, an avid outdoorsman, a skilled rebuilder of cars, and the right kind of family man for a family of dealerships. He had sons, Chester Jr. and Roy, and in the late 1930s, Jack's establishment would become a Pontiac dealership, which Chester would take to almost immediately, but for the arrival of 1941 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when both boys enlisted in the Air Force. Chester's tour of duty landed him in London, England as a general's chauffeur, while Roy's took him to Tunisia. Meanwhile, Jack expanded his skill in the auto trade by buying, rebuilding, and selling cars.

Upon the boys' return in the mid to late 1940s, Chester and Jack formally took on the Pontiac franchise, while Roy's went to work at a local metal factory as a parts manager. 1951 brought the acquisition of a Cadillac franchise and a gain of 15 employees, and in 1957, Jack passed away, calling Roy back to his father's dealership to become head cashier. By 1963, Reynolds had acquired GMC franchise rights, and shortly after that, built a body shop using the newly purchased building next door. When, in 1968, the tractor dealership next to the old showroom relocated, we purchased that building, too, converting it into the main showroom. The former showroom became the service department.

Now, it's 1970. one of Chester's two sons, Kevin, comes on board. At the same time, GM awards us a Buick franchise, and only a few months later, Kevin enlists in the Navy to serve the country in the Vietnam conflict. Kevin would return in 1972 to sell cars under his father's guidance, while his younger brother, Tom, would join the team after an illustrious football career at Virginia Tech.

The next 11 years were spurts of continued work and growth. In 1986, Chester passed unexpectedly from pulmonary fibrosis, leaving Reynolds to Tom and Kevin. Kevin Sr. would take on the role of Sales Manager and Dealer-Operator, while Tom would become General Manager and President, though each continued to labor in the tradition of service learned from their fathers before them.

By 1990, a lot purchased to increase frontage and improve our exposure along the main stretch of our highway would see things take off in a new direction, with 1991 and later not only bringing the opening of another used car dealership but also heralding the arrival of our first import line, Subaru. The rest is history.

To bring it all back around to where it all began, our history of more than 70 years "unites" us today with one common thread: the Reynolds experience, and one we're happy to extend to you, our friends and neighbors here in Orange County and beyond. Visit us today to discover all that Subaru has to offer your drive, and we'll introduce you to what a tradition of customer and community service means. We look forward to meeting you!
